Hierarch on his way to winning the Individual Silver Medal at the 2004 NAYRC

General Information

Foaled in 1989, Hierarch is an approved Dutch Warmblood stallion.  He is just under 16 hh, and Mahogany Bay in color.  A lovely conformed horse, Hierarch has an exemplary topline with a clean throatlatch, an excellent poll connection, a superb neck, the ideal saddle position and an exceptionally strong loin connection.  This powerful topline allows Hierarch to be very correct and strong in his movements with a tremendous ability for collection and extension.  He can do canter pirouettes all day (literally, one right after another) or do an extended trot that will make your heart melt.  Judges often comment on his seemingly effortless transitions from collection to extension.

Cocktail KEUR (Purioso x Le Val Blanc)- Hierarch's sire

Cocktail was ranked #1 on the Dressage index in Holland for many years.  He competed successfully international at Grand Prix under Anky Van Grunsven.  Cocktail was well known for producing strong, sound horses with very good ability for collection.  Cocktail is the sire of Grand Prix superstars such as Jazz and Impersario, as well as the sire of over a dozen approved stallions.

Dudaula STER (Amor x Doruto)- Hierarch's dam

Hierarch's dam was the beautiful mare Dudaula.  She was Champion mare in Holland when presented for Ster in 1988.  Unfortunately, she colicked just two months after having her first and only foal, Hierarch, in 1989.  Her owner and breeder, Eugenie Van Dam, described her as a simply delightful mare, with lovely conformation and fantastic basic paces.  As evident by the photo, she was a beautiful mare even by today's strict type and movement standards.

Amor KEUR PREF (Herrscher x Loretto) Dudaula's sire

Amor was a Holsteiner stallion used by the KWPN to improve the overall population for dressage and jumping beginning in the 1970s.  Former head of the KWPN, Gert van der Veen spoke of Amor affectionately when describing the type of offspring he produced.  "He generated a lot of movement, temperament, willingness to work and sound legs.  His front was very typical [easy to recognize]- he produced expressive heads, well-formed necks that were carried with pride, and absolutely no horses that were built on the forehand.  Amor offspring have the natural power of the hindleg that enables elevation of the forehand."  Amor can be found in the pedigree of many top KWPN horses, included Judgement (2002 WEG show-jumping competitor with Beezie Madden), Tinka's Boy (top Dutch showjumper), Broere Jazz (Top Grand Prix dressage horse and sire in Holland) and Korona (Top Grand Prix dressage horse for Canada), to name a few.

Udaula KEUR PREF PREST (Doruto x Eclatant) Dudaula's dam

As stated in the text about Amor, he tended to add a lot of natural power from the hind leg.  Judging by this picture of Hierarch's grandmother, Udaula, Amor didn't need to add much!  Not only is Udaula listed as one of the top 250 mares in Holland on the index for producing dressage horses, three of her offspring are also present on the list!  Udaula had a long and successful breeding career, producing offspring such as the Elite Sport Keur mare, Nudaula, currently competing at FEI.  Udaula is also the dam of the Keur mares Fundaula and Gudaula, by Pion and Kaiserstern xx respectively.  She was bred to Pion three times in total, with each breeding resulting is Ster or better offspring.  Udaula may be found in the pedigree of no less than ten FEI Dressage horses currently competing around the world.

Doruto KEUR PREF (Komet x Pindar xx) Udaula's Sire

Doruto is considered to be one of the most influential dressage sires of all time.  Unlike the Amor offspring who were flashy and showy from a young age, the Doruto offspring were often plain in appearance, with common heads and ordinary movement.  However, as these offspring matured, their desire to please the rider and ease in the FEI movements became apparent.  Gert van der Veen described Doruto offspring in an article for a Dutch magazine.  "The Doruto offspring have such a character.  Even though they are not duds, they allow themselves to be worked- they do not oppose to the input of the rider.  One of the essential traits for a dressage horse is that he must be able to easily handle the physical demands of the sport...  They are very trainable.  They allow themselves, some a little earlier than others, to become gymnasts.  They don't break down mentally and they stay happy."  Some of the notable international Doruto offspring from the 1980s and 1990s include Ideaal (ridden by Jo Hinneman, trainer of Olympic Ferro, to numerous German, European and World Championships), Olympic Barbria (1996 Team Silver Medal at the Olympics), Urion, (ridden by Nadine Capellmann, World Champion) and Heruto (Grand Prix horse under Coby van Baalen).

Ladaula KEUR PREF PREST (Eclatant x Wachtmeester) Udaula's Dam

The best offspring Amor and Doruto produced, came from when their lines were crossed.  It is for this reason that some of the most desired dressage blood in the KWPN is that of Amor and Doruto.  With these two remarkable sires in his damline, and the number of producer of dressage horses, Cocktail, for his sire, it is no accident Hierarch is not only excelling in dressage, but also producing phenomenal offspring.  With the power and elegance of Cocktail, the soundness of Amor and the trainability of Doruto, Hierarch is every dressage rider's dream- a horse that is not only willing to do the job, but that can compete with the best of them.
